LANCASTER
Private Collection
The Avro Lancaster first flew on 9th January 1941 and had been designed to replace the distastrous Avro Manchester, which was severely underpowered. Hence, the Lancaster was powered by 4 Merlin X engines and over 7300 airfames were built.
Thoughout World War II, 59 units from RAF Bomber Command were equipped with the Lancaster, which flew some 156,000 sorties dropping over 608,000 tonnes of bombs and 51 million incendiary devices.
Only 2 Lancaster bombers remain airworthy today, one in Canada and the other with the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
